Yoga

Woman sat at with a laptop computerThe ancient practice of yoga is something that everyone can enjoy and benefit from for the rest of their lives, regardless of age, health or ability.

The word yoga means 'union'. The practice of yoga facilitates the reconnection – or union – of the body with the mind to bring inner contentment and peace.

A typical Hatha Yoga class will include a centering, 'pranyama' (breathing techniques), warm ups, 'asanas' (poses or postures) and finish off with relaxation. Some classes may also include some meditation. The many benefits of yoga include:

Flexibility

Despite our best efforts too stay active and mobile, many people often lead sedentary lifestyles . The classic poses of yoga create the full range of motion and flexibility we all need to stay supple.

Bone and muscle strength

Yoga is excellent for building strength in muscles and bones. What's more, increased flexibility and weight-bearing poses help to protect you from conditions such as arthritis, back pain and osteoporosis. Spinal discs crave movement, so a practice with forward and backward bends and twists helps to keep the discs supple.

Inner wellbeing

Yoga practice encourages the lymphatic system to drain more efficiently, and inverted postures encourage improved circulation as well as helping with kidney problems.

Breathing

Most people use only 30% of their lung capacity. Yoga encourages deeper breathing to help relax the body and encourage improved sleep. Deeper breathing can also calm down the nervous system and reduce stress.

Balance

Yoga uses poses that improve your balance and posture, which helps the mind to focus and could result in fewer falls in later life. Yoga also complements Pilates, so to taking part in both disciplines will give your body a really great workout.
